An Accelerated Reader-Reader.

At the beginning of first grade, she really took on a love for reading.  And with a little competition between her reader friends, she was on fire after Christmas break.  I received an email from her teacher when the kids returned to school that read, "Roundabout has become very interested in AR tests lately.  She has quickly gone through many of the books we have in the classroom.  If she wants to start reading some books at home, I am fairly sure you all have many of them.  If you go to the school website , you can see a list of the AR tests the school offers.  I believe Magic Tree House books have some tests.  Then she can read at home, and take the quiz on the book at school."

And that's when it really began.  She started reading almost a chapter book a day along with a couple other shorter ones.  She'd take sometimes 3 and 4 Accelerated Reader quizzes a day.  Her teacher was blown away and she was quickly racking up reader points.  Instead of the required 20 minutes of reading homework a day, she was reading well over an hour a day.  Her speed and comprehension were both increasing so quickly.  


Come the end of first grade, her teacher pulled me aside one day and told me that she believed that Roundabout had enough points to go to an End-of-Year AR party.  It was all abuzz!  She couldn't wait for the "Splash Party"!  This reward alone was enough for her.  She came home with a beaming smile and a painted face.  

The next time I saw her teacher at school, she pulled me aside again to let me know that Roundabout had more than doubled the next closest first grader in AR points.  She thought that the school may be recognizing her at the Awards Ceremony!

And so they did.  I came ready with camera to the awards ceremony.  From January to June, she had read 94 books for a total of 71.2 points.  The school awarded her with a gift certificate to Borders and a book with CD about our very own USA.
